Hilde Higgins, a hairdresser working for funeral homes, is assigned to a new client, Mabel Winnemaker. When Hilde realizes from a photograph that the body on the gurney doesn't belong to Mabel, she reports her findings to the owner of the funeral home and is promptly accused of stealing a diamond ring from her deceased customer. Now her reputation and career are on the line, and the only way to salvage her future is to find the missing Mabel. Can an old boyfriend be of help, or will he just add to the complications in her tangled life?

My Review:

Missing Mabel is a cute chick-lit kind of mystery. Not the most amazing book I've ever read, but enjoyable...

First Impression:
In the first few chapters, I felt overwhelmed with information about the quirky main character, Hilde. She was so ...different, she was almost too weird to be likeable. Hilde's job was very interesting, and she happens upon trouble quite often. When I stuck with her, she grew on me.

I loved:
Hilde worked on her relationship with her mom, even though it was tense and strained and rough. She shares her faith with her friends and goes to church regularly. Hilde is a good friend to everyone and always tries to do the right thing. When she gets into a dating relationship, Hilde makes a good choice, and the man treats Hilde with respect and courtesy. She gets to know a gruff old man, breaks past his exterior, and gains a lot from his friendship. By the end of the book I really liked Hilde and wished there were more books about her.

I didn't like:
Like I said, at the beginning, Hilde's character almost scared me out of reading the book. The plot was confusing all the way through. Several of the characters felt underdeveloped. In the last chapter most of the characters met, and I was confused about who was who and what they were like. Some small parts of the story felt useless and distracting and did not take the story anywhere.

Overall:
If you like a light mystery, not too series, with funny characters interspersed, this is for you. If you are a perfectionist, Hilde will drive you nuts, but give her a few more chapters and you will love her. I really liked Missing Mabel, and I think you probably would, too. :)

  1. This sounds like a fun read! I'm not a fan of really serious mysteries - so this sounds like more my cup of tea =)
